  • I joined the Coast Guard Reserve in 1972, right after completing my B.S. degree at a major university.  During the ensuing years of service (21 in all), I learned about self-motivation and professionalism, a love of travel and meeting people from all walks of life.  I decided to stay in the Reserve through multiple re-enlistments, and looking back on that day in 1972 when I was sworn in to serve my country, it was one of the best decisions of my life. The rewards as a retiree are substantial, and I will always be grateful to my country’s generosity. -Robert Apfelzweig

  • From 1978/1980 I served aboard USCGC PT CARREW 82374. We were the “Spare” boat in the 11th district. We relieved the COSARFAC dual crew boats during their availabilities. We also trained 2 separate groups of reserves from Los Angeles and San Diego. They would come aboard for their active duty two weeks at a time. The San Diego group was all women. The only place at the time they could get sea duty experience. They supplemented our maintenance efforts as well. Both groups were very professional and gave the 5-man caretaker crew one more reason to be proud as we trained them and ensured they were properly trained. Thank you for your service. – Michael Hudson

The US Army gave me time to shop around and heard so much good things of the Coast Guard that I checked into the Coast Guard recruiting office and took the test. Did very well and within the week I signed on; November 1972. I saw this as my calling and made a full career. 12 1/2 active and 8 1/2 years reserve. I’m so glad I did. Happy 84 years to the reserves. Whatever way you served you should be proud of your time. I retired twice. Military and civilian life! Now age 73. -Charles Lafon
  • I joined the US Coast Guard in 1987 and served until my 60th birthday in 2023. I treasure my time I was able to serve active and reserve in the Coast Guard. I had a great opportunity to help on many events that give me pride to have been able to attend. Today I spread the word to many young men and women graduating from high school about the opportunity available. My uncle Jim served back in 1943-45. He was very proud of his time served. -Robert Davis
